New officials receive certification in a blended model. This requires the completion of Hockey University (HU) Officiating 1/2 as a pre-requisite to attending a face-to-face clinic.
A NEW official is anyone who has no previous Hockey Canada Officiating Program (HCOP) experience.
New Official Certification Process
Step One (1): Register for the HU-Officiating 1/2 online course
Please note: the HU-Officiating 1/2 online course is a component of your certification and that you are also required to attend a face-to-face HCOP clinic before you are deemed certified to officiate for the current season. The course must be completed in full prior to registering for a face-to-face HCOP clinic. It is estimated that the HU-Officiating 1/2 course will take approximately three (3) hours to complete. The $24.000 (plus taxes HU fee associated to the online course in addition to your HCOP Level 1 of Level 2 certification fee(s) and participant assessment fees, if required).
SOME ASSOCIATIONS HAVE LIMITED SPACE FOR NEW LEVEL 1 OFFICIALS DUE TO THE NUMBER OF GAMES AVAILABLE DURING THE SEASON. BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THIS APPLICATION, CONTACT YOUR LOCAL REFEREE IN CHIEF TO CONFIRM SPACE IN YOUR LOCAL ASSOCIATION'S PROGRAM. BC HOCKEY DOES NOT GUARANTEE GAME ASSIGNMENT.
Step Two (2): Complete modules with the HU-Officiating 1/2 course
In order to receive credit for the HU-Officiating 1/2 course, you must follow the link provided to you via email upon registration. DO NOT attempt to access the online course with anyone else's link as it will not give you credit for taking the course within your personal profile. Also be aware that the course will not be recognized on your Hockey Canada profile until ALL of the associated modules have been completed in full, including the closing survey. Once you have received an electronic certificate of completion, you will be able to proceed to register for a face-to-face HCOP clinic.
Step Three (3): Register for HCOP Certification Clinic (face-to-face)
The HCOP Certification Clinic season begins late August and runs until the end of November annually. Once these clinics begin to be posted online, they will be accessible through the eHockey website and by searching clinics on the BC Hockey website. As a new official, you will register under one (1) of the following two (2) types of clinics:
- Level 1 HCOP Clinic
- Officials aged 12 - 15 years (as of December 31 of the calendar year)
- Level 2 HCOP Clinic
- Officials aged 16 years and older (as of December 31 of the calendar year)
All returning officials can go directly to their face-to-face clinic registration as no pre-task is required. If you have received an error message while attempting to register for a clinic or you cannot register for a clinic because it states that you do not have the appropriate HU prerequisite, please attempt to login into your e-learning course and complete any outstanding modules. If this does not work, please email email@example.com.
