BC Hockey announced today that Karlie Martens, a forward for the Prince George Cougars has been selected as the Female Midget AAA player of the month for January. Martens had a sensational month finishing with five (5) goals, one (1) assist and no penalty minutes. She is a two-way player that has helped the Cougars this season. Her game on the ice can be quite rough at times, but she has a finesse side that allows her to score the hi-light reel goals.
In addition to her stellar play on the ice, Karlie has been involved with her community off the ice. For the past few years she has gone to Mexico with her Church to help build homes for the less fortunate.
“Karlie’s work ethic on the ice is second to none, she never quits,” said Cougars head coach Terri Pfliger. “She will rush on offense and skate twice has hard on the back-check and the younger players feed off that.”
Karlie was chosen from a high calibre list of other nominees. The runners up in no particular order are as follows:
-
Saanich Breakers – Kayla Natarelli
-
Vancouver Fusion – Nicole Ma
-
Kamloops Mystixs – Emily Edmundson
-
Fraser Valley Phantom – Lorena Matzek
-
Kootenay Wildcats – Serina Swanson
-
Okanagan Rockets – Cody Cooper
The Female Midget AAA League was initiated in the 2007-2008 season in response to the membership’s desire to provide an opportunity for elite female hockey players to come together on zone teams to challenge other elite Female Midget teams.
