Wednesday, February 17, 2010

The BC Hockey Female Midget AAA League sixth weekend of league play was held February 5-7. The six (6) teams in the Female Midget AAA League travelled to the Kelowna, BC to play nine (9) games.

The Female Midget AAA League regular season is now complete. Teams will travel to Prince George, BC for the Female Midget AAA Championship and the winner will move on to compete against the Alberta League Champion. The winner of the Midget Female Regional’s will earn a berth to the Female Midget National Championship in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The Female Midget AAA league will use the same league play format for the 2009-10 season as they did last year. Each team will host a league play weekend whereby all the teams come together, similar to a tournament, at the same place one (1) weekend a month to play multiple league games against the other teams. This has been a measure adopted by the league to maximize playing time and to reduce travel and accommodation expense.

The following will provide a summary of the weekend’s action as well as updated league standings.

The opening game of the weekend pitted the Thompson-Okanagan Rockets against the Kootenay Wildcats. The game ended 4-3 in favour of the Rockets. Lindsey Audia (Trail, BC) had a great game finishing with one (1) goal and two (2) assists. The second game of the day had the Fraser Valley Phantom take on the Vancouver Fusion. Fusion goaltender Paige Clark (Langley, BC) was stellar in the 4-0 win for the Fusion. The final game of the first day had the Vancouver Island Impact battle the Prince George Cougars. After three (3) exciting periods of hockey, the game ended in a 3-3 tie. The Impact rallied from a three (3) goal deficit in the third period to tie the game.

The Vancouver Fusion took on the Kootenay Wildcats in the first game on Saturday. The game was a tough battle for each team and the Fusion came out on top in the end with a 6-3 score. Jackie Lang (Vancouver, BC) finished the game with four (4) points – one (1) goal and three (3) assists – for the Fusion. The second game of the day pitted the Prince George Cougars against the Thompson-Okanagan Rockets. The Rockets played a dominant game winning 8-0. The third game of the day saw the Kootenay Wildcats play the Vancouver Island Impact. The Impact had a strong game, but could not score the go ahead goal losing 6-4. Lindsey Audia had another great game scoring four (4) goals. The final game of the day had the Prince George Cougars taking on the Fraser Valley Phantom. The Phantom played a strong defensive game in their 2-0 win. Megan Spooner (Prince George, BC) had a great game in net for the Cougars.

The first game on day three (3) of action saw the Vancouver Island Impact taking on the Fraser Valley Phantom. The Impact had a great game, but fell just short in a 2-1 loss. The Impact’s Christine Smith (Nanaimo, BC) and Katelyn Atchison (Lake Cowichan, BC) each turned in an impressive performance. The final regular season game was a battle for first place in the League with the Vancouver Fusion taking on the Thompson-Okanagan Rockets. In a fast paced and very exciting game, the Fusion edged the Rockets 4-3. Brittany Laing (Port Coquitlam, BC) capped off a great weekend scoring the game winning goal with four (4) minutes remaining in the game.
