Female High Performance Program and the BC Winter Games
BC Hockey’s Female High Performance Program was established to identify and train athletes and team personnel for possible participation at Provincial, National and International events. The High Performance program partners with the BC Winter Games every other year for their U16 provincial competition.
The U16 Program is the second step in high performance hockey in British Columbia. The U14 Program introduces young athletes to the on-ice and off-ice skills and focus areas required to compete at the high performance level. Long Term Athlete Development is introduced and used as a guide for both the individual player and the program as a whole. The U16 program expands on these concepts and leads into the U18 program which is the pinnacle of high performance programming in BC. Selected athletes from this level advance to compete in the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence, culminating with the National Women’s Team.
Although the percentage of athletes involved in the High Performance program who actually experience international competition is very small, the program plays a valuable role by focusing on the skills, attitude and dedication expected of a High Performance athlete. In addition, it allows athletes who possess these skills to be identified in a systematic way across our country.
