Okanagan Rockets 2013-2014 Major Midget Champions

Saturday, March 22, 2014

The Okanagan Rockets captured their second BC Major Midget League Championship with a 4-3 series clinching win against the Vancouver North West Giants.  The Rockets won the best-of-three Championship series 2-0.  The Championship series was played at the Burnaby Winter Club.

The opening game of the Major Midget League Championship was an exiting end to end game with the Rockets coming out on top 2-1.  Tanner Browne scored the game winning goal for the Rockets on the power play in the second period.  Rockets goaltender Brendan Barry was stellar in the final frame to preserve the one (1) goal win.

The second game of the series was similar to the first, with each team taking turns with scoring chances.  Heading into the third period tied at three (3), Jake Kryski scored a breakaway goal with a beautiful shot.  The Giants pushed hard, but were unable to tie the game.  The loss snapped the Giants five (5) year reign as BC Major Midget League Champions.

The Rockets will now wait to see who they will play from the Alberta Midget AAA League.  The Championship series is currently underway with Red Deer Chiefs taking on the Lloydminster Bobcats.   Okanagan will travel to Alberta for the 2014 Pacific Midget Regional Championship on April 4-6, 2014.  The game time and location will be announced once confirmed.

The BC Hockey Major Midget League was established in 2004 to provide elite level 15, 16 and 17 year olds an opportunity to play within their own age group.  Playing at this high level and be developed for the next level of hockey. These teams have an opportunity each year to compete for the National Midget Championship.
