The North Island Silvertips of the BC Major Midget League (MML) have announced that Joey Ewing (Port Alberni) will take over the head coaching duties for the team replacing Dave Johnston (Nanaimo).
Ewing spent last year as a skill development coach and coach mentor with Nanaimo Minor Hockey Association (MHA). Prior to his time with Nanaimo MHA, Ewing spent two (2) seasons as head coach with the Comox Valley Glacier Kings if the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) from 2015-2017. He has also served as an assistant coach with the Golden Rockets of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) in 2011 and spent seven (7) years as a minor hockey coach in Whistler.
Prior to coaching, Ewing played in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) for the Winkler Flyers and Southeast Blades, helping the Blades win their first-ever division championship. Joey finished his junior ‘A’ career with the Quesnel Millionaires in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL).
The MML was established in 2004 to provide elite level 15, 16 and 17 year-old players an opportunity to play within their own age group at a high level and be developed for the next level of hockey. These teams have an opportunity each year to compete for the TELUS Cup, Canada’s National Midget Championship.
