BC Hockey announced Tuesday, September 18, 2012 that the BC Hockey Coach – Hybrid clinic will now encompass a checking skills module for the 2012-2013 season. This module will focus on the progression of checking skills for players through the development of the primary skills of: skating, agility, angling, puck protection, stick checks, body contact and where appropriate, body checking.
The checking skills module will instruct delegates on the core competencies required to teach checking skills; keys to understanding the age appropriate skills need by players, the difference between body contact and body checking, how to identify the inherit risks associated with checking and the progressions needed for safe hockey to all their athletes.
To best achieve the learning outcomes, it is recommended that clinics will have an additional two (2) hours of classroom time and one (1) hour of ice time.
