BC Hockey, in conjunction with Sportability, is excited to offer a Sledge Hockey Try-It event on Saturday, October 20, 2012. The Try-It event will take place at the Surrey Sport and Leisure Centre from 4:30pm – 6:00pm and is designed for people of all ages and abilities. Several current sledge players and coaches will run drills outline their experience with the game.
Registration is limited and is offered on a first come, first serve basis.
This Try-It event is held alongside the First Pacific Coast Sledge Hockey Invitational which is taking place October 19, 2012 – October 21, 2012 at the Surrey Sport and Leisure Centre. Four teams (4) will play a three (3) game round robin, with finals on the afternoon of Sunday, October 21, 2012.
The first international sledge hockey game took place in the 1960’s between one of the club teams in Stockholm and a club team from Oslo, Norway. There are now over 15 countries regularly playing sledge hockey across the globe. Sledge hockey made its Paralympic Winter Games debut in 1994 in Lillehammer, Norway. Team Canada won their first gold medal in the 2006 Games in Torino, Italy and followed that victory up with one at the 2008 World Championship. Sledge hockey has become one of the biggest spectator attractions at the Paralympics as it is a fast-paced, highly physical game which often features intense action.
