The communities of Dawson Creek and Fort St. John will once again be hosting the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge after a successful event in 2015.
At the 2015 event, Dawson Creek and Fort St. John shared a legacy of nearly $120,000 from the proceeds of the event and an additional $50,000 was donated to local minor hockey associations from 50/50 sales. Following the event, an economic impact study concluded that close to $6 million in economic activity was generated for the Peace Region and province of British Columbia.
At this year’s event, many grassroots initiatives are planned; from jamborees to officiating clinics. Working with its new international marketing partner, BDO, Hockey Canada is expanding a legacy through BDO Goals for Kids. The program will see $50 for every goal scored at a national championship, and $100 for every goal scored by either Team Canada Black, Red or White at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge go back to the Minor Hockey Association (MHA) in that community to assist with offsetting equipment and registration costs for young players.
