Team BC Female Summer Camp

Tuesday, July 06, 2010

The Team BC Female Summer Camp was held at the Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt in Victoria, BC from July 1-4, 2010. Twenty-seven (27) players attended the rigorous four (4) day camp. The 27 players are vying for one (1) of 20 spots on Team BC that will compete at the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The camp was highlighted when the players visited the naval ship, the HMCS Protecteur. The HMCS Protecteur is a supply ship to the Canadian Naval fleet when at sea. The players were given a tour of the ship by female crew members who also shared their stories and experiences of working on the ship and the Canadian Navy.

"We brought 27 potential Team BC players into the Summer Development camp for the purpose of further evaluation and to have some input on their off season training plans. The Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt was the perfect venue for us, as the regimented military environment and discipline required to serve in the Canadian Navy is similar to what will be required for success at the Canada Winter Games,” said Team BC head coach Greg Hermiston.  “We were fortunate to have an opportunity to tour the Naval ship HMCS Protecteur.  As well, we received a weapons demonstration from the only female weapons tech in the Navy. The female sailors had an impact on all of us, as they proudly showed off their ship and spoke of the importance of team work in their jobs in the Military. The players now break for the summer and have a three month window to further develop their skills in preparation for our final selections in late September."

The intense four (4) day camp included:
  • On-ice ice sessions
  • Off-ice training sessions
  • Classroom presentations and Canada Winter Games preparation

The next stage of the selection process for Team BC is a preparation tournament which will be held in September. BC Hockey will release more information on the tournament in early September. At the conclusion of the tournament, BC Hockey will announce the 20 players selected to Team BC.

BC Hockey’s Female High Performance Program was established to identify and train athletes and team personnel for possible participation at Provincial, National and International events.
