MacDonald Named October Player of the Month
BC Hockey announced that Maryna MacDonald of the Vancouver Island Seals has been named the Female Midget AAA (FMAAA) Player of the Month for October 2016. The 5’8” defenseman from Port Alberni, BC tallied seven (7) points in her team’s first nine (9) games to start the season.
MacDonald started the season off on a hot streak, scoring three (3) goals and one (1) assist in three (3) games over the opening Showcase Weekend in Surrey, BC. Said Seals Head Coach Dennis Bellavance, “Maryna started the season with a three (3) point game and kept on racking up the points as the month went on. As a defenseman, she led the league in points for most of the month of October and still kept a ‘plus’ rating despite our current standing.”
Off the ice, MacDonald acts as an ambassador for her team, volunteering with a variety of initiatives. Said Bellavance, “Maryna is an excellent leader both on and off the ice. She strives to make sure her teammates are seen as ambassadors to her new community in Campbell River (home of the Seals), and at her new school. As team captain she has several fundraising ideas in the works and she is looking forward to seeing them through to fruition. A recent commitment to Harvard University has opened her eyes to the importance of community and she takes this role very seriously.”
MacDonald was chosen from a high-calibre list of other nominees, including: Denver Gray (Fraser Valley Rush), Sophia Christopherson (Greater Vancouver Comets), Reece Hunt (Kootenay Wild), and Laine Grace (Thompson-Okanagan Lakers).
The FMAAA program consists of six (6) zone-based teams across the province – the Fraser Valley Rush, Greater Vancouver Comets, Kootenay Wild, Northern Capitals, Thompson-Okanagan Lakers, and Vancouver Island Seals. The teams play a 30 game regular season, followed by the playoffs. The FMAAA Champion has the opportunity to compete for the ESSO Cup, Hockey Canada's National Female Midget Championship, which will take place in Morden, Manitoba from April 23 - 29, 2016.
The FMAAA program was initiated in the 2007-2008 season in response to the membership’s desire to provide an opportunity for elite female hockey players to come together on zone teams to challenge other elite female Midget teams. The league has had more than 100 players move on to post-secondary hockey opportunities.
