Major Midget League Player of the Month - October

BC Hockey announced November 13, 2012 that Mathew Barzal (Coquitlam, BC) has been named the Major Midget League player of the Month for October.  Barzal finished the month of October with nine (9) goals and ten (10) assists in seven (7) games.
Barzal has been an instrumental player for the Vancouver North East Chiefs, factoring into the team’s scoring in every game except one (1) this season.  The Chiefs currently sit fourth with a 9-5-2 record.
Barzal led the U16 Team BC to gold at the Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup last week in Calgary, Alberta.  The team captain racked up three (3) goals and nine (9) points in four (4) games and was named to the U16 Challenge Cup All Star Team. 
“Mathew consistently leads by example in his hard work both on and off the ice,” commented Vancouver North East Chiefs head coach Doneau Menard.  “He is a dynamic player with drive and determination.”
As well as being named Player of the Month, Barzal will receive an exclusive gift from Easton on his selection.  He was chosen from a high calibre list of nominees for this prestigious award.  The runners up in no particular order are as follows:

  • Fraser Valley Thunderbirds - Kyle Westeringh
  • Greater Vancouver Canadians - Austin Adamson

  • Okanagan Rockets - Brendan Wagner
  • Cariboo Cougars - Liam Blackburn
  • South Island Royals - Jesse Jenks
  • Thompson Blazers - Riley Harder
The BC Hockey Major Midget League was established in 2004 to provide elite level 15, 16 and 17 year olds an opportunity to play within their own age group.  Playing at this high level and be developed for the next level of hockey. These teams have an opportunity each year to compete for the National Midget Championship.
