Vancouver North West Giants Finish Fourth at the 2007 Telus Cup
Wednesday, May 2, 2007

The 2007 Telus Cup has wrapped up in Red Deer, Alberta.  The tournament had six teams representing the major divisions across Canada and was held April 23-29, 2007.  The Prince Albert Mintos, representing the West division, took home the gold, and the Vancouver North West Giants, representing the Pacific division, ended up in fourth place.

Earlier in the tournament, the Vancouver North West Giants played against the host Red Deer Optimist Rebels for the title of Pacific Regional Champions.  The game had no effect on the actual standings of the two teams prior to the Telus Cup because the Optimist Rebels, representing Alberta, had a buy-in to the tournament as the hosts.  This game was played solely for boasting rights and the opportunity to be crowned the Pacific Regional Champions.  At the end of the round robin series, the Giants finished in third place overall and once again played the Optimist Rebels to determine who would play for gold in the final game.  The Rebels prevailed with a score of 3-2.

The Telus Cup bronze medal game saw the Giants take on the Saint-Francois Blizzard of the Quebec division.  The Giants fought hard but fell to the Blizzard with a final score of 5-1.  In the championship game, the Mintos defeated the Optimist Rebels 3-2 in double overtime to give them their second Telus Cup victory in as many years.

The Giants faired well when it came to the 2007 Telus Cup awards banquet.  Giants’ team members were awarded two out of the seven awards given out that night.  Team captain Matthew Bell received the Most Sportsmanlike Player of the tournament, and the one thousand dollar Esso Scholarship was awarded to Jamie Leveille.

At the end of the 2007 Telus Cup, the hockey world saw the Vancouver North West Giants end their season as the fourth best midget team in Canada.  BC Hockey is proud to congratulate the Giants on their outstanding season, and looks forward to next year.
