The nineteenth week of regular season play in the Major Midget League took place over the weekend with 10 across the province. The following will provide game summaries for each of the five (5) doubleheaders.
Major Midget League Standings
Valley West Hawks vs. Thompson Blazers
Game One (1): Hawks 9 – Blazers 3
Game Two (2): Hawks 8 – Blazers 0
The Valley West Hawks won a pair of games over the visiting Thompson Blazers this past weekend. The Hawks took an early first period lead in game one (1) with five (5) straight goals thanks to Matt Barberis (White Rock), Matt Bradley (Surrey), Davis Koch (White Rock) and a pair from Mitch Newsome (Surrey). Late in the second, the Hawks added two (2) more goals by Bradley and Newsome. The Blazers got on the board with just under three (3) minutes remaining in the middle frame when Dexter Robinson (Kamloops) found the back of the net off a pass from Gordon Keaton (Kamloops). Newsome netted a pair of goals for the Hawks in the third, to finish the game with five (5) goals. The Blazers added two (2) goals in third 30 seconds apart thanks to Robinson and Riley Barnes (Merritt).
In game two (2), the Hawks took a two (2) goal lead in the first thanks to goals by Bradley and Eric Callegari (Langley). The Hawks added to their lead with four (4) goals within the first six minutes of the second period from Callegari, Bradley and a pair from Trevor Ayre (Surrey). The Hawks finished the game with a pair of power play goals in the third thanks to Newsome and Luke Gingras (Langley).
Fraser Valley Thunderbirds vs. Kootenay Ice
Game One (1): Thunderbirds 5 – Ice 1
Game Two (2): Thunderbirds 6 – Ice 3
The Kootenay Ice were on the road over the weekend where they dropped a pair of games to the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds. In game one (1), Nicholas Ponak (Abbotsford) got the Thunderbirds on the board first when he netted a goal off passes from Brice Sharp (Mission) and Tyler Wickman (Abbotsford). The Ice answered back early in the third thanks to a power play goal by Ross Armour (Trail) from Evan Gorman (Trail). The Thunderbirds took the lead back when Austin Wellsby (Chilliwack) scored an unassisted goal midway through the final period. With less than five (5) minutes remaining in the game, the Thunderbirds secured the win with three (3) straight goals thanks to Hayden Guilderson (Chilliwack), Wellsby and Wickman.
In game two (2), the Thunderbirds jumped to an early lead with five (5) unanswered goals in the first period thanks to Ponak, Guilderson, Wellsby and a pair from Danny Choi (Abbotsford). Kadrian Klimchuk (Castlegar) got the Ice on the board with just over a minute remaining in the second off a pass from Kane Roberts (Castlegar). The Ice’s second goal came midway through the third when Justin Podgorenko (Nelson) found the back of the net with help from Tyler Van Steinburg (Cranbrook) and Trevor Van Steinburg (Cranbrook). With just under two (2) minutes remaining in the game, Wellsby netted a power play goal for the Thunderbirds and Kane Roberts (Castlegar) found the back of the net for the Ice’s final goal.
Vancouver North West Giants vs. Okanagan Rockets
Game One (1): Giants 4 – Rockets 4
Game Two (2): Giants 4 – Rockets 3
It was a battle between the top two (2) teams in the league as the Vancouver North West Giants hosted the Okanagan Rockets over the weekend. The Rockets got on the board first in game one (1) when Branden Wagner (Kelowna) netted a goal off passes from Jake Kryski (Kelowna) and Mahlon Head (Kelowna). The Giants answered back midway into the second when Dante Fabbro (Whistler) found the back of the net with help from Justin Szeto (Burnaby) and Carmine Buono (Burnaby). A couple minutes later, the Rockets took back the lead thanks a goal by Cory Santoro (Kelowna), assisted by Tanner Campbell (Kelowna) and Carter Hikichi (Kelowna). Late in the third, Tyson Jost (Kelowna) increased the Rockets lead by two (2) when he scored a power play goal with help from Campbell and Kryski. Thirty seconds later, Colton Kerfoot (West Vancouver) netted the Giants second goal, assisted by Szeto and Quinn Thompson (West Vancouver). With less than two (2) and half minutes remaining in the game, Jost scored another power play goal for the Rockets which was answered just 30 seconds later thanks to another Giants goal by Kerfoot. Thompson scored the tying goal for the Giants with just over one (1) minute remaining in the game with help from Szeto and Quinn Benjafield (North Vancouver).
Game two (2) was another close battle between the Giants and the Rockets. The Giants got on the board first when Fabbro found the back of the net off passes from Kerfoot and Thompson. Just over a minute into the second, Keyvan Mokhtari (Burnaby) scored an unassisted goal for the Giants which was followed by an unassisted goal by Head to put the Rockets on the board just 30 seconds later. The Rockets tied the game when Jost scored off a pass from Head. Early in the third, the Rockets took the lead thanks to a goal from Liam Finlay (Kelowna), assisted by Tanner Wishnowski (Kelowna). The Giants tied the game just past the midway mark of the final period with a power play goal by Fabbro from Buono and Thompson. Less than two (2) minutes later, Keegan Jones (West Vancouver) netted the Giants game winning goal off passes from Jack Tadey (North Vancouver) and Ryland Chernomaz (North Vancouver).
Greater Vancouver Canadians vs. North Island Silvertips
Game One (1): Canadians 2 – Silvertips 1
Game Two (2): Canadians 2 – Silvertips 5
The North Island Silvertips were on the road over the weekend to visit the Greater Vancouver Canadians where the two (2) teams split their double header. In game one (1), the Canadians got on the board first when Scott Munro (Vancouver) netted a goal with help from Sean Gillespie (Vancouver) and Braeden Gurney (Delta). Carter Turnbull (Nanaimo) tied the game for the Silvertips less than a minute into the second off passes from Hunter Findlater (Powell River) and Joe Gage (Campbell River). Midway through the third, Gillespie scored the Canadians second goal, which would prove to be the game winner.
In game two (2), the Canadians struck first when Kyle Uy (Vancouver) found the back of the net off passes from Owen Seidel (Richmond) and Gurney. With just 22 seconds remaining in the opening period, Grady McInnes (Campbell River) got the Silvertips on the board with help from Findlater and Turnbull. Half way into the second, Turnbull gave the Silvertips the lead when he netted one with help from McInnes and Gage. Early in the third, Gary Dhaliwal (Richmond) tied the game for the Canadians, assisted by Gillespie and Alex Whitwham (Richmond).
