October 2015 Player of the Month - Ben Evanish, Valley West Hawks
Monday, November 16, 2015

BC Hockey announced that Ben Evanish of the Valley West Hawks has been named the Major Midget League (MML) Player of the Month for October 2015. The 6’1” forward from White Rock, BC finished the month of October at second in the league in scoring, tallying 17 goals and five (5) assists for a total of 22 points in 11 games to start the season.

Evanish, a 17 year old second year player, is the captain of a Hawks squad that is currently tied for first in the league with an 11-4-1 record.

Contrary to many players in the league, Evanish was not drafted by a Western Hockey League team. As a result of his impressive start to the season, he has been listed with the Moose Jaw Warriors. He has also been noticed by the British Columbia Hockey League’s (BCHL) Chilliwack Chiefs, and has begun playing for them as an affiliate player.

Said Valley West Head Coach Jessie Leung, “As an undrafted, second year 17 year old player in our league, Ben represents how our league doesn’t just develop the 15 year old WHL draft picks. Ben has been asked to show much more responsibility this season as both a returning player and our captain. He has been very mature and has been a great ambassador of our league.”

Evanish was chosen from a high-caliber list of other nominees, including Colton Thomas (Cariboo Cougars), Kyle Davis (Fraser Valley Thunderbirds), Matteo Paler Chow (Greater Vancouver Canadians), Hunter Floris (Kootenay Ice), Dawson Heathcote (North Island Silvertips), Matt Kowalski (Okanagan Rockets), Jordan Guiney (South Island Royals), Matt Facchinelli (Thompson Blazers), Kolby Matthews (Vancouver North East Chiefs), and Justin Wilson (Vancouver North West Giants).

The BC Hockey Major Midget League was established in 2004 to provide elite level 15, 16 and 17 year olds an opportunity to play within their own age group at a high level and be developed for the next level of hockey. These teams have an opportunity each year to compete for the National Midget Championship.
