Nanaimo’s Patrick Bajkov didn’t skip a beat when he jumped from the North Island Silvertips of the Major Midget League (MML) to the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League WHL) as a 15 year old. Due to his late birthday, Bajkov was one of the youngest players in the WHL, but he was able to tally 19 point (9 goals, 10 assists) in 56 games during his first year in the league.
Says North Island coach Jeff Carey, “We were incredibly proud of Patty when he was signed by Everett as a 15 year old. His jump to the WHL as a second year Midget player was a testament to how offensively creative and threatening he was. His jump to Everett shows how hard he worked and how he developed throughout his year with us in North Island.”
In his second WHL season, Bajkov increased his point total to 45 points (23 goals, 22 assists) in 72 games. In November 2015, he was named to the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Central Scouting “Players to Watch” list for the 2016 NHL Draft, where he is projected to be a late round pick.
A product of the Nanaimo Minor Hockey Association (MHA), Bajkov joined the North Island squad as a sixth round WHL draft pick. He had an offensive prescence from the get-go, scoring two (2) hat tricks in his first two (2) weekends of league play. He went on to score a total of 31 points (20 goals, 11 assists) in 40 games. Says Carey, “Patrick grew as a player with the North Island Silvertips. He added depth and dimensions to his game and became a much more well-rounded player. He was called upon for timely scoring and was responsible and hardworking defensively. Off of the ice, Patrick worked as hard as he did on the ice. He was incredibly respectful, well-mannered and dedicated to the team’s systems and season plan.
Today, Bajkov is in the midst of his third WHL season with the Everett Silvertips, and already has 27 points (9 goals, 18 assists) in 38 games. Everett is currently in fourth place in the WHL’s Western Conference with a 24-12-2 record.
The BC Hockey Major Midget League was established in 2004 to provide elite level 15, 16 and 17 year olds an opportunity to play within their own age group at a high level and be developed for the next level of hockey. These teams have an opportunity each year to compete for the National Midget Championship.
