The Major Midget League (MML) playoffs are heating up, with the semifinal round taking place this weekend. Win and you’re in the Championship series, lose and you go home. Who will earn the chance to play for the Cromie Memorial Trophy and a trip to the Pacific Midget Regionals?
#1 Valley West Hawks vs. #4 Okanagan Rockets
Game 1: March 11, 8:00PM, Surrey Sport & Leisure Centre
Game 2: March 12, 6:30PM, South Surrey Arena
Game 3: March 13, 3:00PM, South Surrey Arena*
After defeating the eighth-ranked Greater Vancouver Canadians in two (2) games with a 17-3 goal margin, the Hawks move on to the semifinals ready to face the Rockets’ stellar goaltender Cole Demers. Demers has led the Rockets most of the season due to an injury to his goaltending partner, Liam Hughes, backstopping to a 7-1-4 record in February and a 2-0 record so far in the playoffs.
#2 Cariboo Cougars vs. #3 Vancouver North West Giants
Game 1: March 11, 5:00PM, Kin 1
Game 2: March 12, 5:00PM, Kin 1
Game 3: March 13, 11:00AM, Kin 1*
The Giants got pushed to the brink by the #6 Vancouver North East Chiefs, taking the three (3) game series into sudden-death overtime. The Giants survived and now head to Prince George to face off against the Cariboo Cougars, who dispatched the #7 South Island Royals in two (2) games last weekend, scoring 11 goals against their opponent.
The two (2) winning teams will advance to the MML Championship series, which will take place March 18 – 20, 2016. The MML champion will take on the champion of the Alberta AAA Midget Hockey League (AMHL) from April 1 – 3, 2016 in the Pacific Midget Regionals for the right to represent the Pacific region at the 2016 TELUS Cup, taking place April 19 – 24, 2016 in Quispamsis, New Brunswick.
The MML was established in 2004 to provide elite level 15, 16 and 17 year olds an opportunity to play within their own age group at a high level and be developed for the next level of hockey. These teams have an opportunity each year to compete for the TELUS Cup, Canada’s National Midget Championship.
