FMAAA Recap – Week 2

FMAAA teams hit the road this weekend, travelling throughout the province for the first round of home openers. Catch up on all the scores with this Week 2 recap.
Northern Capitals vs. Thompson-Okanagan Lakers
Game 1: Northern 2, Thompson-Okanagan 1
Game 2: Thompson-Okanagan 6, Northern 3
Game 3: Thompson-Okanagan 2, Northern 1
The Lakers made the trip to Prince George and took two (2) of three (3) games against the Capitals on their home ice. Northern won their home opener 2-1 thanks to goals from Kenna Lloyd and Braxtyn Shawara, while Elizabeth Lenardon scored the Lakers’ only goal of the game. In Game 2, the Lakers dominated on offense, blowing a close game open in the third period. The Capitals opened the scoring with a goal from Caitlin White midway through the first, but the Lakers responded with a goal late in the first (Elizabeth Klimm) as well as early in the second (Jenna Fletcher). Shawara tied it up for the Capitals heading into the third, but the Lakers took over, with Fletcher, Anne Cherkowski, Ashlyn Sunderman, and Cassidy Stasiuk scoring to bring their total to six (6) goals. Jordan Shanks scored for the Capitals as the game ended 6-3. In Game 3, the teams were tied at 1-1 for most of the game with goals from Caily Mellott (Capitals) and Chanreet Bassi (Lakers) before the Lakers’ Sunderman scored the game-winning goal with less than four (4) minutes remaining.
Vancouver Island Seals vs. Greater Vancouver Comets
Game 1: Greater Vancouver 5, Vancouver Island 1
Game 2: Greater Vancouver 3, Vancouver Island 2
Game 3: Greater Vancouver 3, Vancouver Island 2
The Comets left the Island with three (3) wins, continuing their perfect start to the season. Michaela Read, Mya Taylor, Hailey Gayda, Jenn Gardiner, and Sophia Christopherson scored in Game 1 for the Comets, while Maryna MacDonald scored the lone goal for the Seals. In Game 2, the Seals opened with a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from MacDonald and Katie Ferguson, but the Comets scored three (3) unanswered goals in the second frame (Darci Johal, Maddison Warren, Emma Hall) to take the game 3-2. In Game 3, it was the Comets who jumped out of the gate with a 3-0 lead (Johal, Christopherson, Madeleine Ericsson). The Seals attempted a comeback as MacDonald and Alyssa MacDonald scored in the third period, but it wasn’t enough as the game ended 3-2.
Kootenay Wild vs. Fraser Valley Rush
Game 1: Kootenay 5, Fraser Valley 1
Game 2: Kootenay 1, Fraser Valley 1
Game 3: Fraser Valley 4, Kootenay 0
Playing in Fruitvale on Friday night, the Wild took a 5-1 win over the visiting Rush thanks to goals from Kelsey Patterson (2), Reece Hunt, Emma Wheeldon, and Olivia Buckley. Denver Gray scored the lone goal for the Rush. Kootenay opened the scoring in Game 2 with a goal from Emma Caron, but the Rush fought back to tie the game in the third period thanks to a goal from Taylor Read. The Rush then took Game 3 with a 4-0 win thanks to a shutout from Rosetta Maggio and goals from Kieanna Stephens, Emily Nelson, Michelle Guo, and Janey Wilson.
The FMAAA was initiated in the 2007-2008 season in response to the membership’s desire to provide an opportunity for elite female hockey players to come together on zone teams to challenge other elite female Midget teams. The league has had over 100 players move on to post-secondary hockey opportunities.
