BC Hockey announced that Rebecca Clarke of the Greater Vancouver Comets has been named the Female Midget AAA (FMAAA) Player of the Month for December 2016. The 5’10” forward from North Vancouver, BC tallied six (6) points (3 goals, 3 assists) in just three (3) games last month.
In her first FMAAA season, Clarke has racked up 14 points (7 goals, 7 assists) in 17 games. Her team sits atop the league standings with an undefeated 18-0-0 record as they headed into the holiday break.
Said Comets Head Coach Mark Taylor, “Rebecca has been improving every month and although we only played three (3) league games in December against a very good team in Vernon, Rebecca was excellent in all three (3) games. Her centre Naomi Choong (Richmond, BC) should also be recognized for her five (5) goals and one (1) assist in three (3) games.”
Off the ice, Clarke plays for her high school basketball team and volunteers at various school events.
Clarke was chosen from a high-calibre list of other nominees, including: Denver Gray (Fraser Valley Rush), Katie Young (Northern Capitals), Chanreet Bassi (Thompson-Okanagan Lakers), and Jaydlin Spooner (Vancouver Island Seals).
The FMAAA program consists of six (6) zone-based teams across the province – the Fraser Valley Rush, Greater Vancouver Comets, Kootenay Wild, Northern Capitals, Thompson-Okanagan Lakers, and Vancouver Island Seals. The teams play a 30 game regular season, followed by the playoffs. The FMAAA Champion has the opportunity to compete for the ESSO Cup, Hockey Canada's National Female Midget Championship, which will take place in Morden, Manitoba from April 23 - 29, 2017.
The FMAAA program was initiated in the 2007-2008 season in response to the membership’s desire to provide an opportunity for elite female hockey players to come together on zone teams to challenge other elite female Midget teams. The league has had more than 100 players move on to post-secondary hockey opportunities.
