Atkinson Named January Player of the Month
Friday, February 10, 2017
BC Hockey announced that Scott Atkinson of the Greater Vancouver Canadians has been named the Major Midget League (MML) Player of the Month for January 2017. The 6’0” forward from Vancouver, BC notched 14 goals and six (6) assists for a total of 20 points in eight (8) games last month.
Said Canadians Head Coach Phil Alalouf, “Scott not only scored a hat-trick in a pivotal game against the Vancouver North East Chiefs (including a short-handed goal and the game-winning goal), but he also scored six (6) goals in a single game including three (3) goals in one (1) shift.  Scott is a very humble young man and is very respected throughout the league. Even though he is our captain and a veteran, he is always grabbing the pucks, bottles and extra sticks after practice and games.”
A fifth-round selection of the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) Edmonton Oil Kings, Atkinson has 58 points (35 goals, 23 assists) in 32 games and is leading the league in scoring so far this season. The Canadians currently sit in fourth place in the league standings with an 18-11-3-2 record.
Atkinson was chosen from a high-calibre list of other nominees, including: Daine Dubois (Cariboo Cougars), Baxter Anderson (Fraser Valley Thunderbirds), Aiden Jenner (Kootenay Ice), Max Palaga (Thompson Blazers), and Jonny Sheardown (Vancouver North East Chiefs).
The MML was established in 2004 to provide elite level 15, 16 and 17 year olds an opportunity to play within their own age group at a high level and be developed for the next level of hockey. These teams have an opportunity each year to compete for the TELUS Cup, Canada’s National Midget Championship, which will take place April 24 – 30, 2017 in Prince George, BC.
