BC Hockey announced that Gage Goncalves of the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds has been named the Major Midget League (MML) Player of the Month for November, 2017. The 6’1” forward from Mission, BC racked up 15 points (8 goals, 7 assists) in the eight (8) games in November.
Goncalves, 16, has 40 points (16 goals and 24 assists) on the season and leads the Thunderbirds in scoring by 12 points. He is tied for second in MML scoring and has scored two (2) points in two (2) games as an affiliate player with the British Columbia Hockey League’s Chilliwack Chiefs.
Off the ice, Goncalves is an honours student and volunteers his time with local hockey skills camp while also being a mentor to minor hockey players.
Goncalves was chosen from a high-calibre list of other nominees, including: Marcus Allen (Cariboo Cougars), Adam Pipe (Kootenay Ice), Austin Dendl (North Island Silvertips), Brendan Boyle (Okanagan Rockets), Tyson Gayfer (Thompson Blazers), Nolan Krogfoss (Valley West Hawks), Kyler Kovich (Vancouver North East Chiefs), and Nik Hoem (Vancouver North West Giants).
The MML was established in 2004 to provide elite level 15, 16 and 17 year-olds an opportunity to play within their own age group at a high level and be developed for the next level of hockey. These teams have an opportunity each year to compete for the TELUS Cup, Canada’s National Midget Championship taking place in Sudbury, Ontario April 23-29, 2018.
