Peter Hay Named MML Coach of the Year
Thursday, April 5, 2018

BC Hockey announced that Peter Hay (Abbotsford) of the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds has been named the Major Midget League (MML) Coach of the Year for 2017-2018 season.

Hay has helped lead the Thunderbirds to a league championship in his first year as head coach after Fraser Valley defeated the Cariboo Cougars in the league final this past weekend.  The Thunderbirds finished the regular season third in the league with 25 wins, and 52 points.  The MML Coach of the Year has been awarded to the top Major Midget coach in BC since 2009-2010.  Hay marks the first time a bench boss from Fraser Valley has been named coach of the year.  Before joining Fraser Valley, Hay was an assistant coach with the Chilliwack Bruins of the Western Hockey League (WHL) for two (2) seasons before the franchise was moved to Victoria.

Hay and the Thunderbirds will compete against the Lethbridge Midget Hurricanes of the Alberta Midget Hockey League (AMHL), at the Pacific Regional Championship, April 6-8, 2018 at the Prospera Centre in Chilliwack. The winner of that series will earn a berth in the TELUS Cup, Canada’s National Midget Championship, being held April 23-29, 2018, in Sudbury, Ontario.

The MML was established in 2004 to provide elite level 15, 16 and 17-year-olds an opportunity to play within their own age group at a high level and be developed for the next level of hockey. These teams have an opportunity each year to compete for the TELUS Cup, Canada’s National Midget Championship taking place in Sudbury, Ontario April 23-29, 2018.
