Pacific Midget Regional’s – Game 3
Sunday, April 5, 2009

The Pacific Midget Regional’s Championship third and final game between the Vancouver North West Giants and Calgary Buffaloes was played at the Burnaby Winter Club today in front of the third consecutive sell-out crowd.  Calgary won game one (1), 3-1 and the Giants won game two (2), 6-3.  The winner of the game will represent the Pacific Region at the 2009 TELUS Cup.

Each team came out strong to start the first period, but it was the Buffaloes who would strike first.  At the 7:15 minute mark Joel Lowry (Calgary, BC) scored to make it 1-0 for his team.  The Giants would settle down after this and the first period ended 1-0 for the Buffaloes.

The Buffaloes came out strong to start the second period and were rewarded with a quick marker by Mitch Board (Calgary, BC) at 2:52 to take a 2-0 lead.  The Giants made a goaltender change at this point and brought Khaleed Devji (West Vancouver, BC) in to replace Eric Williams (Langley, BC).  This changed the momentum of the game.  After three (3) great chances to score on the power play, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Burnaby, BC) scored at 6:44 to make it a 2-1 game.

To start the third period, the Giants were unable to finish on a number of great scoring chances.  On a power play mid-way through the period the Giants were finally able to tie the game at two (2) with a Jared Eng (North Vancouver, BC) shot from the point at 11:07.  The Buffaloes were unfazed and at 15:28 Chris Collins (Calgary, BC) scored to give his team the 3-2 lead.  The Giants applied enormous pressure for the finale five (5) minutes, but were unable to beat the Buffaloes goaltender.

The Calgary Buffaloes are the 2009 Pacific Midget Champions and will represent the Pacific at the 2009 TELUS Cup in Selkirk, Manitoba.  The Giant’s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was named the MVP of the series and was awarded a $500 scholarship from TELUS.
