Major Midget League Player of the Month - January
Friday, February 5, 2010
For the first time in the history of the award two (2) players have been named Major Midget League Player of the Month. BC Hockey announced on February 5, 2010 that North Island Silvertips forward Evan Richardson (Nanaimo, BC) and Vancouver North East Chiefs goaltender Matt Hewitt (Coquitlam, BC) have been named co-Major Midget League Players of the Month for January.
Richardson has also made history as the first player ever to win the Player of the Month award twice in one (1) season. He finished the month with eight (8) goals, 12 assists and a plus 10 rating. What makes his stats even more impressive is that Richardson was in on 20 of the 24 goals the Silvertips scored in the month of January. Evan was also named the second star in the Major Midget League All Star Game and won the fastest skater competition with a time of 14.17 seconds.
“Evan has been the most dynamic player in the league this season,” said North Island Silvertips head coach Steve Parsons. “Evan continues to lead our team offensively and has been earning penalty killing responsibilities of late.”
Hewitt had an outstanding month finishing with a record of 4-0-1, with a .959 save percentage. In the five (5) games that Hewitt played in the month of January, he only allowed seven (7) goals.  In addition to his on-ice play, Matt works had off the ice with the young goalies in the Coquitlam Minor Hockey system.
“Our goaltending has been solid all year and Matt had an excellent start to the New Year,” said Vancouver North East Chiefs head coach Doneau Menard.
As well as being named Player of the Month, Richardson and Hewitt will receive a gift from Easton on their selection. They were chosen from a high calibre list of nominees for this prestigious award. The runners up in no particular order are as follows:
  • Cariboo Cougars – Marcus Beesley
  • Vancouver North West Giants – Curtis Loik
  • Fraser Valley Bruins – Jason Siebert
  • Greater Vancouver Canadians – Troy Stecher
  • Valley West Hawks – Austin Plevy
  • Kootenay Ice – Kai Thompson
  • South Island Thunderbirds – Garrett Holt
