Wednesday, June 2, 2010
The Surrey Eagles announced June 2, 2010 that former Major Midget League head coach Matt Erhart (Ladner, BC) has been named the head coach of the Surrey Eagles of the BCHL. Also this past month, the Coquitlam Express named former Vancouver North West Giants head coach Jon Calvano (West Vancouver, BC) as their head coach after signing him to a three (3) year contract.
Erhart joined the Eagles as a player in 1997 and the following year won the RBC Royal Bank Cup with the team. In the 2008-09 season he led the Canadians to the Major Midget League Championship losing Vancouver North West Giants. This past season Erhart served as an assistant coach and the Director of Scouting for the Eagles.
Calvano joined the Express after three (3) successful seasons as the head coach of the Giants. Under his leadership the Giants have been a powerhouse in the MML. In 2007-08 season they lost in the Championship Series against the Cariboo Cougars, while the past two (2) years the Giants have won the MML Championship.
Joining Calvano with the Express is Grant Kerr. Kerr has been involved with the MML since the 2005-06 season. He was the head coach of the Giants until the 2006-07 season when he relinquished his head coaching role to Calvano. Kerr served as an assistant coach with the Giants for the past three (3) seasons.
The BC Hockey Major Midget League was established in 2004 to provide elite level 15, 16 and 17 year olds an opportunity to play within their own age group at a high level and be developed for the next level of hockey. These teams have an opportunity each year to compete for the National Midget Championship.
