Male U17 Team Pacific Short List Announced
Friday, August 10, 2007

BC Hockey would like to congratulate the 18 players selected to the 2007-2008 Team Pacific Short List.

These selected players competed against 31 additional athletes at the BC Hockey Male U17 High Performance Provincial Development Camp held July 23 to the 28 in Nanaimo, BC. All 49 players had already participated in two previous stages of the BC Hockey Male High Performance Program and had been selected to advance to the provincial development camp, an accomplishment in itself.

Of the 18 short listed players, 11 will be selected November 15 to join 11 players from Alberta, forming Team Pacific 2008.

“It’s been a grueling week, and it’s been a great week here in Nanaimo.  Both players and staff have surpassed desired efforts,” said Team Pacific Assistant Coach Russ Weber. “The kids have worked extremely hard as a whole to push each other to ensure the best of everyone was shown.”

During camp, the players participated in three scrimmages. These games gave the public an opportunity to watch BC’s elite male under 17 players in action. For the games, the players were separated into two teams: Team Canucks and Team Stars. Team Stars won the first two games. In the final game, Team Canucks came out on top, however Team Stars were crowned champions of the Ted Hargreaves Memorial Cup 3-game series.

“We wanted the games to be competitive and they were extremely competitive. The playing skills of all were seen and it made for a great camp,” said Weber.

The participants of the BC Hockey Male U17 High Performance Provincial Development Camp have now completed the first stage of Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence. The objective of the program is to introduce players and coaches to world international style competition and IIHF playing rules. This program assists with the identification and training of players and coaches for the National Under 18 Team, National Junior Team and the Canadian Olympic Team.
