Valley West Hawks Capture 2015-16 BC Major Midget League Championship
Sunday, March 20, 2016

The Valley West Hawks capped off their season with a two (2) game sweep of the Cariboo Cougars in the BC Major Midget League Championship series.  The Hawks will now represent BC in the Pacific Midget Regional Championship and will travel to Alberta to play the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League champion.
In game one (1) of the Championship series, the Hawks came out strong scoring three (3) unanswered goals in the opening frame.  Goal scorers for the Hawks were Ben Evanish, Luka Burzan and Joshua Bruce.  After a scoreless second period, the Cougars came out flying in the third period and were rewarded with an early Josh Maser marker to make it a 3-1 game.  On the power-play with seven (7) minutes remaining, the Hawks restored their three (3) goal advantage with a goal from Michael Farren.  Nicholas Tallarico shut the door the rest of the way and preserved the 4-1 game one (1) win for the Hawks.
The Cougars came out with a purpose in the second game of the series and were rewarded with a pair of early goals from Jesse Pomeroy and Trey Thomas.  Late in the first, Ben Evanish cut the lead to one (1) with a power play goal for the Hawks.  The Hawk’s momentum carried into the second period with three (3) unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead.  James Malm, Ilijiah Colina and Joshua Bruce each scored for the Hawks in the frame.  The Cougars were not going to go easy and early in the third period, Trey Thomas and Tyler Maser scored to tie the game at four (4).  The lead was shortly lived and in a span of seven (7) minutes the Hawks scored five (5) unanswered goals to make it a 9-4 game.  Malm scored a natural hat trick brining his game total to four (4), was joined with goals from Kabir Gill and Christian Bosa.
The Championship win is the first in the history of the Valley West Hawks.  The win now marks a different team winning the MML Championship in the last four (4) years; in 2012-13 the Vancouver North West Giants, in 2013-14 Okanagan Rockets and in 2014-15 Vancouver North East Chiefs.
This is the second year in a row the Cariboo Cougars were swept in the Championship series.  The team will now shift focus to the 2016-2017 season when the they will serve as the host team for the 2017 TELUS Cup.
The Pacific Regional Championship will take place in Alberta on April 1-3, 2016, where the BC MML champion will play the Alberta AAA Midget Hockey League champion in a best-of-three (3) series to determine the Pacific Representative at the 2016 TELUS Cup, which will be held in Quispamsis, New Brunswick, from April 18-24, 2016.  The Lloydminster Bobcats currently lead the Foothills Bisons 2-0 in the best of five (5) Championship series to determine the Alberta Champion.
