The Yale Secondary School Lions Blue Team captured its second consecutive BC High School Hockey League (BCHSHL) Championship, and first ever Tier 1 title, with a 7-3 win over the Earl Marriott Secondary School Mariners. In the Tier 2 Championship game, the Riverside Secondary School Rapids won the Tier 2 banner with a 7-4 victory over the Walnut Grove Secondary School Gators.
The Yale Lions Blue Team opened up the scoring just 1:44 into the first period at the Matsqui Recreation Center in Abbotsford on May 15, 2011. The first period saw back and forth goals as the Earl Marriot Mariners tied it up twice after giving Yale a one (1) goal lead. Despite finding themselves in penalty trouble in the second period, Yale managed to enter the third period with a 6-3 lead. The third period saw Earl Marriot struggle with penalty trouble, and Yale Secondary capitalized en route to their 7-3 win.
The top point scorers were Yale Secondary’s Mike Nolan with one (1) goal and two (2) assists, Jake Virtanen with two (2) goals, and Craig Stewart with one (1) goal and one (1) assist. Earl Marriot’s James Neil also put up one (1) goal and one (1) assist.
The Tier 2 Championship took place May 13, 2011 at Burnaby Winter Club, where the Riverside Rapids opened a 3-1 lead after the first period. Despite a good effort from the Walnut Grove Gators in the second period, the Rapids entered the third period with a 6-3 lead. Both teams added one more to the scoreboard in the third, bringing the Rapids to their 7-4 win.
Riverside’s Erik Rasche was a top point scorer for his team, along with Travis Tookey and Sandro Carelli. Rasche finished with two (2) goals and one (1) assist, Tookey with three (3) assists, and Carelli with two (2) goals. Walnut Grove’s Jeremy Whalen led his team with one (1) goal and one (1) assist.
The BCHSHL is a fun but highly competitive league open to hockey players in grades 10-12 (midget-aged hockey players) who are registered BC Hockey players (junior hockey players are excluded), and are enrolled full time in the schools that they play for.
