Team Canada took home the gold medal at the 2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge that was held this past week at the Winsport Canada Athletic and Ice Complex in Calgary, AB from November 27 – December 3, 2011. BC players Scott Karrasch (Surrey, BC) and James Gemmel (Quesnel, BC) were amongst the championship team.
The gold medal match up took place Saturday, December 3, 2011 between Canada and the United States. Team Canada defeated the USA by a score of 4 - 1. Norway took home the bronze medal with a 5 – 3 win over Japan.
This is the fourth gold medal for Canada in the tournaments history. Canada also took home gold in 2007 (Kelowna, BC), 2008 (Charlottetown, PEI) and 2010 (London, ON). In 2009 in Charlottetown, PEI, Canada lost the gold medal game to the USA in overtime.
Team Canada was selected based on performance at the National Sledge Team Selection Camp that was held September 7-11, 2011 in Barrie, ON. Head Coach Mike Mondin (Trail, BC), Assistant Coach Billy McGuigan (Charlottetown, P.E.I) and Hockey Canada scouts assembled the team.
The team will continue to represent Canada at a number of international games and tournaments throughout the 2011-2012 season, including the 2012 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship in Hamar, Norway in March 2012.
