BC Officials Attend Hockey Canada Level VI Officiating Seminar
Friday, November 13, 2015

Three (3) BC Hockey officials recently attended the Hockey Canada Level VI Officiating Seminar November 6 – 8, 2015 in Moncton, New Brunswick.  The seminar prepares top officials in Canada for national championships and designated International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) competitions, including World Championships.

Adam Griffiths (Victoria, BC), Mark Pearce (North Vancouver, BC) and Mike Langin (Kelowna, BC) represented BC Hockey at the event, with Langin attending as a Western Hockey League (WHL) designate.

Griffiths started officiating in 1999 with the Kerry Park Minor Hockey Association (MHA).  He obtained his Level IV certification in 2007 and Level V in 2010.  Adam is currently a referee in the BC Hockey League (BCHL), Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) and Western Hockey League (WHL) and serves as an above minor supervisor on Vancouver Island. Adam officiated at the 2013 World U17 Hockey Challenge in Victoriaville, Quebec and has also served as the head instructor for the BC Hockey Summer Officiating Schools.

Pearce began officiating in 1999 with the North Vancouver MHA.  He obtained his Level IV certification in 2008 and Level V in 2011. Mark is currently a referee in the BCHL, CIS and WHL, while serving as an above minor supervisor within the Lower Mainland. Mark also represented BC Hockey at the 2015 Western Canada Championship and the World U17 Hockey Challenge in Windsor, Ontario in 2013.

Langin started his officiating career in 2004 with the Kelowna MHA.  He earned his Level IV in 2010 and Level V in 2011.  He currently serves as a referee in the BCHL, CIS, WHL and recently attended the National Hockey League (NHL) Summer Officials Combine, prior to starting his first season as a referee with the American Hockey League (AHL).  Mike has also officiated at the World U17 Hockey Challenge in Victoriaville Quebec, in addition to skating the 2014 Royal Bank Cup in Vernon, BC.

The purpose of the Hockey Canada Level VI Seminar is to provide elite provincial Branch Level V officials with the following opportunities:

  • To receive the newest information, techniques and procedures available to officials
  • To receive instruction from Hockey Canada Officiating Program’s top instructors and guest presenters
  • To compare their skills with both elite Canadian and international officials
  • To receive game supervision from national supervisors

At the seminar, candidates underwent extensive fitness testing both on and off the ice and were required to obtain a minimum score of 90 percent on a written national exam.  During the seminar, each candidate was supervised during a game and is now required to be supervised by a national supervisor before the Level VI certification can be deemed complete.

Level VI Seminars are held based on a national need for Level VI officials.  Each Hockey Canada Branch is invited to nominate a minimum of one (1) candidate to participate in the biannual seminar.  Currently, BC Hockey has seven (7) active Level VI officials: Ryan Benbow, Kevin Bennett, Mike Campbell, Jeff Ingram, Brett Iverson, Steve Papp and Sean Raphael.
