BC Hockey had four (4) officials attend events in conjunction with the Hockey Canada Officiating Program of Excellence (OPoE) and the Western Hockey League (WHL) in October and November.
Referee Trevor Nolan (Port Moody) and linesman Liam Reid (Victoria) officiated at the 2015 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup, October 28, 2015 – November 1, 2015 in Calgary, Alberta. This event featured the best players in the U16 category representing the four (4) western provinces of Alberta, BC, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. This event originated in 2009 and serves as the top scouting event for U16 players in non-Canada Winter Games years.
Referee Ryan O’Keeffe (North Vancouver) and linesman Michael McGowan (Mission) represented BC Hockey at the 2015 World U17 Challenge in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John, BC. This event featured three (3) balanced Canadian teams (Red, White and Black) and five (5) international teams (Finland, Russia, Sweden, Czech Republic and the United States). This event is used to identify and further develop the top 16 year old players in the world at an international level.
Nolan began officiating in 2004 with the Port Moody Minor Hockey Association (MHA). He is currently a Level III referee who officiates in the BC Hockey League (BCHL), Pacific Junior Hockey League (PJHL) and BC Hockey’s Major Midget League (MML).
Reid started officiating with Comox Valley MHA in 2008. A graduate of the BC Hockey OPoE, Liam currently lines the BCHL, Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) and is also a referee in MML.
O’Keeffe began officiating in 2003 with North Vancouver MHA. A graduate both the BC Hockey and Hockey Canada OPoE programs, Ryan is a current Level V official. He serves as a referee at the BCHL, PJHL and Canadian Intercollegiate Sport (CIS) levels.
McGowan started officiating in 2004 with the Mission MHA. He is a Level IV official and currently officiates within the CIS, Western Hockey League (WHL), BCHL and PJHL.
