The 2007 Female Under 18 Provincial Development Camp is currently taking place in Nanaimo, BC. The camp runs from August 13-18 and the ice sessions are located at the Nanaimo Ice Centre, 741 Third Street, Nanaimo, BC (250-756-5200). All ice sessions are open to the public.
Attending the camp will be 44 of BC’s top U18 athletes who were initially evaluated in six zone camps held throughout the province. They then competed in the U18 BC Cup held in Salmon Arm in April 2007 before being invited to attend the Provincial Development Camp.
The purpose of the camp is two fold. First, the athletes will be exposed to a competitive environment which is modeled after the National Women’s Program. On-ice sessions will focus on individual and team tactics while off-ice lectures and activities will cover fitness, mental preparation and team building exercises. Secondly, at the conclusion of the camp, Team BC will be selected and will compete in the National U18 Women’s Challenge in Kitchener Ontario in November 2007.
The athletes will be evaluated throughout the week by BC Hockey High Performance staff in both their on-ice and off-ice activities.
Greg Hermiston (Kamloops), head coach of Team BC had these remarks on the camp and the national competition, "It is a privilege to be selected to lead Team BC into the U18 National Women's Hockey Championship in Kitchener, Ontario in November. The U18 program is a very exciting place to be right now with the start up of Hockey Canada's National Women's Program at this level, along with the inaugural World Women's U18 Championship in January. My staff and I are looking forward to a very competitive camp in Nanaimo with forty-four elite athletes vying for the twenty spots on Team BC.”
