The Cowichan Valley held a successful 2017 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships hosting 16 teams, eight (8) teams in each the male and female divisions from across the country.
Both the male and female teams from BC won bronze medals. On the female side, BC’s Camryn Scully (Prince George) scored in double overtime to give the home side a 2-1 victory. On the male side, Corey Cunningham (Prince George) had two (2) goals and one (1) assist to lead BC to a 5-2 win over Saskatchewan. Cunningham led the championship with 14 points (10G, 4A) in six (6) games.
In the female gold medal game, Manitoba finished the tournament with a perfect 6-0 record after defeating Saskatchewan 7-0 in the finale. In the male gold medal game, Manitoba would make it a sweep after a nail-biting 6-5 overtime victory over Ontario.
The event was hosted in the Cowichan Valley with games held in both Duncan and Lake Cowichan.
