U16 Team BC opened the 2008 Nagano Memorial Cup with a 6-0 win over Ermark Angarsk (Russia) solidifying them as the team to beat in the tournament.
Mason Malkowich started the scoring off in the first period when he capitalized on a loose puck in front created by offensive zone pressure from Brady Brassart and Tyler Wotherspoon. Spencer Graboski buried U16 Team BC’s second goal after a beautiful cross ice feed from Augustino Correale off the rush. With the period coming to an end, Brandon Formosa capped off the first period scoring when he outmuscled the Russian centerman off the face off and beat the Russian goaltender high stick side.
Second period scoring came short handed when Brendan Persley caused a neutral ice turnover. Defenseman Zachary Hodder jumped into the play and flew past the weak side Russian defenseman and tipped in a pass from Persley.
Special teams were again the story in the third period when Ryan Renz banged in a Graboski rebound to put U16 Team BC ahead 5-0. The final goal was scored shorthanded on another neutral zone turnover resulting in a two-on-one where Brassart made a pass across the high crease to Justin Polischuk who tap it in.
Erin Williams turned aside 28 shots for the shutout and was named player of the game. The Russian team was made up of players from 1992. U16 Team BC followed tournament guidelines and fielded a team born in 1993.
U16 Team BC will be in action Saturday against the Japan Selects and on Sunday against a Japanese High School Team.
