BC Hockey 100 Great Moments: The Gare Family
Tuesday, November 13, 2018

The Gare family, from Nelson, BC, has a very prominent hockey presence. Ernie Gare Senior started one of the first ever athletic scholarships for universities. The Ernie Gare scholarship is the longest running scholarship in Canada. Gare received the BC Hockey Diamond Stick Award in 1980, and has a BC Hockey “Coach of the Year” award named in his honour.  During his playing days, he played for the Nelson Maple Leafs Senior team, even coaching them for a few seasons.  Ernie’s three (3) sons Ernie Gare Junior, Danny Gare, and Morey Gare were all involved in hockey, and all have their names connected to the National Hockey League (NHL).  Ernie Junior, and Morey both were employed as scouts in the NHL, Ernie was employed by the Bruins in the late 90’s, then moved to the Rangers for fifteen (15) years starting in 2000.  Ernie also won two Mowat Cup’s as a head coach for the Vernon Lakers of the BCJHL.  Morey was an assistant coach with Northern Michigan University for many years, and briefly in junior and pro-leagues before being hired by the Oilers as a scout, and eventually became Director of Professional Scouting for the team.  Danny Gare was the most successful player of the brothers, who captained the Sabres for a number of seasons, and then also captained the Red Wings for several years.  Danny had his number retired by Buffalo, and scored 685 points during his career.  Ernie Sr, and Danny Gare were both inducted into the BC Hockey Hall of Fame, Ernie in 1998, and Danny in 2000.

BC Hockey is a non-profit organization and member of Hockey Canada, providing stewardship of amateur hockey at all levels in British Columbia and Yukon.

Approximately 150 minor hockey associations, 55,000 players, 4,500 referees, 20,000 official volunteers and countless others make our great game possible here in Pacific Canada.
