Sport BC Honours Kyle Turris as Male Junior Athlete of the Year

Sport BC honoured 19 year old hockey phenomenon Kyle Turris as the Male Junior Athlete of the Year award last week at the 42nd Annual Athlete of the Year Awards. Athletes, coaches, volunteers and officials from across the province were recognized with awards from 17 distinct categories, which celebrate recipients for their achievements and dedication to sport.

Turris’s highly impressive and ongoing hockey resume has made him a perfect recipient of this award.  Below are just a few career athletic highlights from the New Westminster native from the last two seasons:

  • 2007 Canada/Russia Super Series Winner with Team Canada
  • Led the Canada/Russia Super Series in goal scoring with seven and was third in overall points with eight
  • Player of the Game in game eight (8) of the Canada/Russia Super Series
  • RBC Financial Group Canadian Junior A Player of the Year
  • Led Canada West to the gold medal at the inaugural World Junior A Challenge
  • Is the highest ever drafted Junior “A” player to the NHL since the level’s inception by the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association in 1970
  • Drafted third overall by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft
  • Finished the 2006-2007 season with 53 games played, 66 goals, 55 assists and 121 total points.  Had two 7-point games (Burnaby Express)
  • In 14 playoff games he had 12 goals, 14 assists and 26 total points (Burnaby Express)
  • In six games he had three goals, two assists for a total of 5 points (Team Canada IIHF U18 Championships)
