BC Hockey’s Board of Directors has approved a membership application from the Capital Region Female Minor Hockey Association (MHA), creating a new MHA in Greater Victoria and the first female MHA on Vancouver Island.
Viewed as a major step forward in the growth of female hockey, specifically on Vancouver Island, this new MHA will add to the eight (8) BC Hockey member female Associations currently operating in the Lower Mainland. The recently completed Female Hockey Report includes findings that female Associations have proven successful at recruiting and retaining female athletes, and forms the basis for the decision by BC Hockey to approve this application.
“In developing our strategies and our new Female Hockey Model, we identified several key factors necessary to ensure the growth of female hockey programming,” said BC Hockey Chief Executive Officer Barry Petrachenko. “Our experience over the past 15 years has shown that female Associations facilitate stronger recruitment initiatives, they create increased female coach education and opportunities, and most importantly they provide more playing opportunities for female players.”
“Having an all-female Association has proven to be a huge advantage for us,” says Vancouver Female MHA President James Nedila. “We can focus 100 per cent on female programming and activities such as Esso Fun Days. We think that it’s a great step forward for female hockey on Vancouver Island and look forward to playing them in the future.”
Female hockey players in the Greater Victoria area will have the choice to play with the Capital Region Female MHA or on integrated teams in their local MHAs. Information regarding registration and boundaries can be accessed on the Capital Region Female MHA website.
The implementation process is underway to restructure the operational model for female hockey in British Columbia and the Yukon, with the release of the BC Hockey Female Report in February 2019. Aligning with the strategic growth plans of BC Hockey and Hockey Canada, and the Government of Canada’s 2017 Women and Girls in Sport report, the Female Hockey Report focuses on key items to grow the female game including the creation of female hockey Associations and the implementation of a new organizational structure for female hockey programming.
