BC Hockey Announces 2009 Team Pacific Staff
Wednesday, June 04, 2008

BC Hockey is proud to announce the following BC staff selected for Team Pacific.  The announcement is a culmination of an application and review process lead by Officer at Large Shannon Bell.

Team Pacific is made up of players from both British Columbia and Alberta who were born in 1992.  This represents the first stage in Hockey Canada's Program of Excellence.  The 11 players selected from BC will be identified, evaluated, and trained through BC Hockey’s Under 17 High Performance Program, which acts as the province's talent identification and training program for player representation on Canada's national teams.

Team Pacific will be the host team in Port Alberni, BC for the 2009 World Under 17 Hockey Championship from December 28, 2008 to January 4, 2009.  The World Under 17 Hockey Challenge is the unofficial World Championship for this age level and the first stage for Hockey Canada to identify players for the National Under 18 Team and the World Junior Team.  In addition to the five Canadian teams (Pacific, Western, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic) there will be five international teams from Russia, USA, Slovakia, Germany and Finland.

The BC staff will prepare both technical and evaluation components of the 2008 Provincial Under 17 Development Camp scheduled for Nanaimo, July 21-26, 2008. The camp will see 48 of BC’s best athletes compete for 11 spots on Team Pacific. The BC players will be short listed to 18 at the conclusion of the Nanaimo Camp.  Of these 18 players, 11 players will be selected and announced mid November to join 11 selected players from Alberta to form Team Pacific 2009.

The implementation of this BC Hockey selection model is to allow the Male High Performance Program the opportunity to evaluate an announced list of players during the regular season of club team play.  In preparation for a short term competition it is vital to assess the skills of the players in a camp setting and in a true game environment.  This standard is also used by Hockey Canada in selecting players for our national teams.
