The BC Games Society recently announced that Terrace, BC will host the 2010 BC Winter Games from March 4-7, 2010. BC’s top developing athletes in sixteen (16) sports, will compete in this four (4) day event. This will be an opportunity for BC Hockey’s top developmental female players to participate at the Provincial level.
BC Hockey’s Female Under 16 High Performance Program will send eight (8) zone teams from across the province to participate in the BC Winter Games. The zone teams are selected by the team staff evaluators during zone camps. The eight (8) teams then compete bi-annually at the BC Winter Games. During the off year of the BC Winter Games, BC Hockey holds their bi-annually Under 16 BC Cup.
BC Hockey decided at the Annual General Meeting in June that it was in the best interest of the Male High Performance Program to compete every year for the BC Hockey Under 16 BC Cup, rather than alternating with the BC Winter Games experience. The decision came by evaluating the BC Games experience on items like the effectiveness of implementing yearly plans, including schedules that coincide with those of club teams for this level of athlete. It was expressed that in the High Performance Program, it is critical that athletes compete under conditions allowing “best ever” performances against their peers since the program is vital to the future opportunities available to these athletes in both High Performance and club team programs.
BC Hockey remains a strong supporter of the BC Winter Games and is hopeful that Male Hockey may be represented at the Games in an optional, non-high performance category.
