BC Hockey Officials Take the Next Step to the WHL
Friday, October 03, 2008

The Western Hockey League recently announced that BC Hockey linesman Jason Cramer, Ryan Dawson, Ron Dietterle, Bevan Mills, Mike Boisvert, and Matt Barker have been hired as linesman for the 2008-09 Western Hockey League (WHL) season.  These officials will join Brett Iverson, referee, and Nick Swaine, referee trainee, in the WHL.  Iverson and Swaine were hired earlier this summer to the WHL Officiating Program.  Please see below for the hometowns of each official:

·         Jason Cramer – Surrey

·         Ryan Dawson – Kamloops

·         Ron Dietterle – Aldergrove

·         Bevan Mills – Langley

·         Mike Boisvert – Trail

·         Matt Barker – Radium Hot Springs

·         Brett Iverson – Richmond

·         Nick Swaine - Kamloops

For the up-coming season, there will now be 35 officials working in the WHL; of the 35, ten (10) will referee, and 25 will serve as linesmen.  The BC Hockey Officiating program continues to grow and develop these young officials to allow them to make the next step in their careers.

“The identification of these officials begins at the grass roots level through their local referee-in-chiefs and then followed by the referee committee members recommending them to the BC Hockey Above Minor program,” said Rob Fryer, BC Hockey’s Referee-in-Chief, “This is a testament to the strong programs put in place to identify these young officials and the follow up with the Above Minor Officiating Coaches.  Many of these officials much like the ones who were there before them will follow their dream to join the strong BC contingent in the National Hockey League.”

The BC Hockey Officiating Program uses the Hockey Canada Officiating Program to train and evaluate officials working within the Branch.  The program that BC Hockey administers allows for basic level training to elite high performance training within the system.  This is a proven method and will continue to develop BC’s top officials and allow for them to make the next step in their development.
