Salmon Arm Selected as 2009 BC Cup Host Site
Tuesday, October 07, 2008

BC Hockey announced today that the Shuswap Recreation Society will host the 2009 Male Under 16 BC Cup and 2009 Female Under 18 BC Cup at the Sunwave Centre in Salmon Arm.  The Male Under 16 BC Cup will be held from April 16-19, 2009, and the Female Under 18 BC Cup will be held the following weekend, from April 23-26, 2009.  Salmon Arm has played an instrumental role in the BC Hockey High Performance Program, as they have consistently hosted first class high performance competitions.

The BC Hockey Male High Performance Program has been designed to instruct and prepare the players for future opportunities in the High Performance Program.  The Male Under 16 BC Cup will host the most talented 15 year old players in BC, and prepare the players for the next step in their developmental process.  Open tryouts will occur from January 2-4, 2009 in eight (8) designated zones throughout the Branch.  The players will be evaluated, and eight (8) teams will be selected following these tryouts to compete in the BC Cup.

The BC Hockey Female High Performance Program has been established as the first identification stage for female players in the Under 18 Program.  The BC Cup will be the second of a three stage process to identify and select the Under 18 Team BC, which participates at the Women’s National Under 18 Championships.  The first stage is open tryouts to select 20 of the top female 16, and 17 year old players in district tryouts; district tryouts will be held April 3-4, 2009.  The players will then be placed on teams in a Jamboree style format to compete for an invitation to the BC Hockey Female Provincial Development Camp.  The final stage of the program is the Provincial Camp, which is held annually at the beginning of August.

“We are pleased to be selected for the 2009 Male Under 16 and Under 18 Female BC Cups,” said host chair, Dale Berger of the Shuswap Recreation Society, “We have been fortunate to have worked with BC Hockey staff on numerous occasions and look forward to again being part of one of the best High Performance programs in Canada.”

The host sites for the 2009 Female Under 16 BC Cup, and the 2009 Male Under 17 BC Cup are still to be determined.  A formal announcement will be made following the selection of the host sites.
