Hockey Canada announced today that BC’s Rayna Cruickshank and Kaleigh Fratkin have been selected to represent Canada at the 2009 World Women’s Under 18 Championship taking place in Fussen, Germany from January 5-10, 2009. Cruickshank and Fratkin also were selected to the National Under 18 Summer Team when Team Canada took on the USA in a 3-game series in August.
There will be a pre-competition camp taking place December 28 – January 1, 2009 in Toronto, ON and the team will travel from there to Fussen, Germany. Eight (8) teams will compete in the six (6) day tournament – Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, Russia, Sweden and the United States.
Kaleigh Fratkin of Burnaby, BC has been a stand out on defence for the Burnaby Minor Ducks. Fratkin participated in National U18 camp in 2007 and was a member of the 2007 National U18 Summer Team.
Rayna Cruickshank, native of Cumberland, BC is a member of the Comox Valley Minor Hockey Association. Cruickshank has been at the National level before as she also attended the 2007 National U18 Camp.
“Both Kaleigh and Rayna impressed us at the selection camp,” says Stephanie White, head coach of Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team. “Kaleigh is a strong skater who can play the game at a fast pace and can jump into the rush, and Rayna is a consistent defenseman who plays her position well and makes good decisions with the puck. We expect both to play a big role on our blue line.”
Cruickshank and Fratkin were integral members of Team BC that competed at the 2008 Women’s Under 18 National Championship in Napanee in November. Team BC finished sixth.
BC Hockey would like congratulate Kaleigh and Rayna on selection to the Women’s National Under 18 Team.
