Team Pacific took to the ice for their first preliminary game at the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge last night when they took on Team Russia in Port Alberni at the Multiplex. The team was looking to respond after a disappointing 11-0 loss to Team USA in their only exhibition game of the tournament on Sunday night. The World Under 17 Hockey Challenge is being played all this week in Port Alberni and five (5) host communities across Vancouver Island, culminating in the gold medal game this Sunday, January 4 at 5:30 pm.
Russia opened the scoring five (5) minutes into the game on a breakaway goal by Evgeny Kuzetsov. Team Pacific’s Brandon Ranford responded late in the first to tie the game at one (1), but Russia was able to regain the lead with 15 seconds to play in the first period.
Pacific’s Brad Ross tied the game at two (2), mid way through the second period, but again Russia answered with a quick goal by Vladislav Namestnikov to restore the one (1) goal lead. The two (2) teams exchanged goals late in the second period and Russia took a 4-3 lead into the third period.
The third period was filled with intense back and forth action as each team was looking for the upper hand. With five (5) minutes to play Team Pacific scored two (2) goals 40 seconds apart to take the 5-4 lead. Max Reinhart scored the tying goal and Brendan Gallagher with the go ahead goal. Again Russia was able to answer and tied the game with five (5) minutes to play. After Team Pacific killed off a 5-on-3 Russian power play, Brett Connolly scored with 15 seconds to play to give Team Pacific the 6-5 win.
Team Pacific will be in action tonight when they take on Team Germany. Puck drop is 7 pm at the Port Alberni Multiplex and will be broadcast on SHAW TV and a radio broadcast can be heard on The Peak 93.3 FM.
