Team Pacific took to the ice last night against Team Atlantic for their third game of the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge. Team Pacific was coming off of their second consecutive win over Team Germany on Tuesday night. The World Under 17 Hockey Challenge is being played all week in Port Alberni and five (5) host communities across Vancouver Island, culminating in the gold medal game this Sunday, January 4 at 5:00 pm.
The first period saw each team have a number of quality scoring chances, but neither was able to capitalize on them. The period ended 0-0 with great goaltending coming from each side. Pacific’s Brendan Gallagher opened the scoring early in the second period, but this was short lived as the Atlantic squad scored two (2) quick goals to take a 2-1 lead.
Heading into the third period Team Pacific was going to need another come from behind win if they were to clinch a spot in a semi-final game on Saturday. Team Atlantic’s Sean Couturier gave his team a 3-1 lead early in the third period, but Team Pacific was determined to battle back. Brendan Ranford scored his second goal of the tournament and just over a minute later Alex Theriau scored to tie the game at three (3).
The game stayed tied at three (3), so overtime was needed to determine a winner. Early into the overtime frame, Team Pacific’s Troy Rutkowskiscored to give his squad the 4-3 win.
Team Pacific has now clinched a semi-final berth and will play this Saturday at the Port Alberni Multiplex. When and who they will play has not yet been determined. They will be in action tonight when they take on Team Ontario for the top spot in Group A. Puck drop tonight is 7 pm at the Port Alberni Multiplex which can be seen on SHAW or heard on The Peak 93.3 FM.
