BC Hockey announced today that registration for the second component of the Female U14 High Performance Program (launched in 2008) is now open. The BC Hockey Female Design Model, adopted in 2007, identified the need to introduce female athletes at this age level to areas of on-ice skill development and off-ice training, allowing them to be successful regardless of the path they choose in our game.
The deadline to register for the second component of the Female U14 program is April 15, 2009.
The Female U14 program will be developmental in nature, no teams will be selected. The specific goals of the program are:
To introduce young female athletes to the High Performance Program, specifically in the areas of on-ice skill development and off-ice training using age and developmentally appropriate materials and strategies.
To provide a learning environment that is fun and challenging, one that will inspire the athletes to continue in the High Performance Program and prepare them for future challenges at the U16 and U18 levels.
To continue to support the athlete throughout the year by providing updated information on the BC Hockey web site in the areas noted above that will be valuable to the athletes, their parents and their club team coaches.
To identify and develop hockey leaders and future high performance staff members in the local community by providing opportunities to participate in camp delivery.
To continually review the program by keeping current with the most up to date materials and information that will allow for continual growth and development.
To bridge the gap between development strategies and commitment in the High Performance Program and the various club team programs.
The program consists of two separate components. In September 2008 BC Hockey ran on-ice camps in the six respective districts. This was a weekend camp where athletes were taught skills and strategies to prepare them for the upcoming hockey season. Included in the camp was fitness information and testing, a parent seminar and on-ice skill development.
The second portion of the program is a single day off-ice training camp at the end of the hockey season designed to focus on the needs of the athletes in the off-season. The two-camp approach recognizes that the needs of the athletes are very different in each of the three phases of their year, in-season (Competitive) and off-season (Transition and Preparatory).
