The Pacific Midget Regional’s Championship series resumed last night with the Vancouver North West Giants taking on the Calgary Buffaloes in the second game of the best of three (3) series. Calgary won game one (1), 3-1. The game started just after 7:00 pm in front of a sell-out crowd at the Burnaby Winter Club.
The Giants came out flying in the first period and were rewarded with an early Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Burnaby, BC) power play goal at the 1:26 mark. After exciting back and forth action, the Giants added to their lead at 13:32 of the first when Steven Iacobellis (Burnaby, BC) scored. The Giants quickly added to their lead when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored a sensational goal at the 15:23 mark. The Giants were not done in the first adding their fourth (4) goal of the game at 16:53 with a Malcolm McKinney (West Vancouver, BC) marker.
The Buffaloes came out determined in the second period to get back in the game. Dylan Nowakowski (Calgary, BC) scored at 3:16 and cut the Giants lead to three (3). This did not faze the Giants. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins completed the hat trick at 11:43 of the second period with a great shot over the top shoulder of the Buffaloes goaltender. Before the period was over, Michael Aviani (North Vancouver, BC) scored to give the Giants the 6-1 lead.
The Buffaloes were unable to get back into the game as the Giants applied great defensive pressure in the third period. The Buffaloes added two (2) late goals, but it was too little too late, Giants win game two (2) 6-3.
Khaleed Devji (West Vancouver, BC) had a great game in the win for the Giants finishing with 17 saves.
