Hockey Canada recently announced the officials for the RBC Royal Bank Cup in Victoria, BC from May 2-10, 2009. BC Hockey will be well represented with Colby Smith (Langley, BC) and Andrew Guest (Penticton, BC) serving as referees and Clay Richardson (Port Coquitlam), Chris Sweeting (Vancouver, BC), Ryan Dawson (Kamloops, BC), Brandon Liefke (Kamloops, BC), Nathan Vanoosten (Surrey, BC) and Trent Knorr (Victoria, BC) serving as linesmen for the event.
Smith and Guest are Level VI referees. A level VI referee is prepared to officiate at National and International Championships. To reach this level you must be certified at Level V and referee at that level for more than one (1) year, and then complete a four (4) day clinic which involves on and off-ice tests.
All six (6) linesmen are Level IV. A level IV official is prepared to serve as a linesman at the Major Junior, Senior, CIAU, CAAA, Inter-Branch and International competitions. To reach this level they first must have their Level III and referee at that level for one (1) year. They must attend a clinic, which is by invite only and pass on-ice evaluation and a written national exam.
BC Hockey Officiating Program
uses the Hockey Canada Officiating Program to train and evaluate officials working within the Branch. The program that BC Hockey administers allows for basic level training to elite high performance training within the system. This is a proven method and will continue to develop BC’s top officials and allow for them to make the next step in their development.
