Male U17 BC Cup Action from Day One
Thursday, April 30, 2009

The prestigious Male U17 BC Cup got underway this evening with the opening ceremonies taking place and the first game of the event.  The Male U17 BC Cup is being held in Salmon Arm at the Sunwave Centre from April 29 – May 3.  Of the top 120 player U17 players in BC, 46 will be selected to attend the Male Provincial Development Camp.  A statistical package for the event can be viewed on the BC Hockey website under the Female U18 section.

BC Hockey and the Salmon Arm Host Committee welcomed all six (6) teams and the officiating crew to the ice in a special ceremony.  Dignitaries were welcomed to the ice followed by a ceremonial puck drop.

Game One

In the first game of the Male U17 BC Cup Team Flyers took on Team Bruins.  The teams came out hitting hard and often which set the tone for the rest of the game.  The Bruins applied the early pressure, but it was the Flyers who would strike twice in the first period.  The Flyers goals were scored by Colton Sparrow (Okanagan Rockets, MML) and Justin Georgeson (Vancouver North East Chiefs, MML).  After a scoreless second period the Flyers added to their lead four (4) minutes into the third period with a goal by Spencer Grabowski (Quesnel, BC).  This is how the first game would end, 3-0 for the Flyers.  Kyle Henry (North Delta) picked up the shutout win in net for the Flyers.

The BC Hockey Male Under 17 High Performance Program is an introduction to International High Performance Hockey which involves a series of short term camps and competitions just as our national teams are exposed to it at a higher level. In addition, the Under 17 program is a pre-cursor to the well-established Hockey Canada Program of Excellence, consisting Canada’s Under 18, World Junior and Men’s National Teams.
