2009 Provincial Development Camps
Monday, July 27, 2009

The 2009 Male Under 17 Provincial Development Camp and the Female Under 18 Provincial Development Camp got underway today in Nanaimo at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. The Male U17 Camp will run from July 27 – August 1 and the Female U18 Camp will run from July 27-31. Also running in conjunction with the Camps are the Male and Female High Performance Officiating Camps.

The male players will battle for the Ted Hargreaves Memorial Cup which is a best of three series between Team Leafs and Team Canucks.  BC’s finest Male U17 players were selected through a careful evaluation process by the BC Hockey High Performance Evaluation Staff at the 2009 U17 BC Cup.

The objectives of this year's camp are to one (1) evaluate and train BC's top 16 year old athletes in preparation for the challenges of high performance hockey, both at the national and international level, and two (2) to short list 21 players for potential participation with Team Pacific at the 2009 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge.  Of the 21 short listed players, 11 will be selected November 15 to join 11 players from Alberta, forming Team Pacific 2009.

On the female side the top 46 U18 players have been invited to attend the camp. The camp will culminate in the selection of Team BC this Friday by the BC Hockey Female High Performance Evaluators. BC Hockey will make a formal announcement at that time.

Among other things, the U18 Provincial Development Camp will consist of fitness testing, on-ice testing, a skills competition, health and nutrition seminar, mental training lecture (athlete preparation for a short term competition), Yoga session (flexibility and injury management), 4 on 4 challenge and four (4) full games.

The Officiating High Performance Program welcomed 14 male officials and 8 female officials to the week long camp. The attendees will participate in on and off-ice training and fitness testing.

The BC Hockey Officiating Program uses the Hockey Canada Officiating Program to train and evaluate officials working within the Branch. The program that BC Hockey administers allows for basic level training to elite high performance training within the system. This is a proven method and will continue to develop BC’s top officials and allow for them to make the next step in their development.

Daily updates from each camp will be posted to the BC Hockey website. Please continue to monitor the website.
