Hockey Canada in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League announced the 22 players selected to Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under 18 Team that will compete at the 2009 Memorial Ivan Hlinka tournament. BC’s Brett Connolly and Jordan Weal were selected to the team.
Connolly from Prince George, BC played for the Prince George Cougars of the WHL in the 2008-2009 season. He finished the past season with 30 goals and 30 assists for 60 points and was named WHL Rookie of the Year. In the 2007-2008 season he was a member of the Major Midget League Champions, Cariboo Cougars.
Weal from North Vancouver, BC played for the Regina Pats of the WHL in the 2008-2009 season finishing with 16 goals and 54 assists. In the 2007-2008 season he played for the Vancouver North West Giants of the Major Midget League and is the all time point leader in a season finishing with 39 goals and 61 assists for 100 points in 40 games.
Both players have progressed through the BC Hockey High Performance Program and were part of the Silver winning Team Pacific at the 2009 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge.
Mark Holick from Penticton, BC will serve as the assistant coach for Team Canada. Holick progressed through the BC Hockey High Performance program serving as Team Pacific head coach in 2004 capturing a silver medal.
Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under 18 Team will compete in the 2009 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament from August 11-15. Canada has won the tournament four (4) of the past five (5) years. Canada will play in Group A with the Czech Republic, Sweden and Switzerland, a group that will be based in Breclav, Czech Republic. Group B, which will play in Piestany, Slovakia, consists of Finland, Russia, Slovakia and the United States.
